Donations still needed for KBTX Summer Hunger Food Drive: ‘Need is increasing every single day’

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The KBTX Summer Hunger Food Drive is coming to an end next Monday, June 30, but there’s still time to drop off donations.

According to the Brazos Valley Food Bank (BVFB), 90% of its monetary goal of $45,000 has been raised this month, and BVFB said it’s just under the halfway point for food donations.

This year’s goal is to collect $45,000 and 45,000 pounds of food. To meet that goal, they need your help to make it happen.

While the food bank said it’s seen a great turnout for the Summer Hunger Food Drive, organizers are still looking for that last push to get donations in.

Staff at BVFB told KBTX food insecurity is a silent and invisible problem, but as prices stay high and inflation lingers, it’s only getting worse.

“This Brazos Valley community is very hands-on, very supportive of each other. So, I think we can do it,” said Amanda Stark, Brazos Valley Food Bank communication and development director.

In her 15 years in Bryan, Stark said food insecurity has continued to grow.

She said families, “Are just doing the best that they can- multiple jobs but just still living paycheck to paycheck.”

In Texas, one in five Texas children experience hunger.

“Those kids, who are just trying to have a childhood, you know, they just wanna play. They don’t have to worry about this. But I hear those stories of, you know, ‘I know that my parents are stressed,’” Stark relayed.

For senior citizens on fixed incomes, or families already living month to month, the stress of high bills during the summer can be overwhelming.

“Those families, those seniors, are having to make those difficult choices between utilities, food, and medication,” emphasized Stark.

Ebony Knight-Tennell, the food bank’s operational director, told KBTX they’re just under the halfway point for the food donations they’d like to see.

“We really need the community’s help to get those pounds where they need to be,” Knight-Tennell pleaded.

Knight-Tennell also told KBTX the need continues to increase as prices increase, and donations can go a long way.

“We’re super excited and blessed to have those donations but we definitely still need more because that need is increasing every single day,” she added.

There are locations across the Brazos Valley taking food and monetary donations for the KBTX Summer Hunger Food Drive:
