LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – CASA for Kids is in Michigan courts, making sure children’s voices are heard.
On Wednesday, the non-profit announced major news. For the first time in Ingham County’s history, every family courtroom will have a CASA advocate for children.
They are volunteers who, stay by a child’s side through their foster care case, providing a sense of stability in an overwhelming situation.
“Most of our kids who come out of the system say the number one thing they talk about is how they feel like they didn’t have a voice and they didn’t know what was going on in their case,” said CASA for Kids Executive Director Rachel Swedburg.
Swedburg said the program started in Ingham County back in 2018. Over time, they’ve built a sense of trust in the community, which has allowed them to expand their services. They will now cover every single family court judge in the county.
“It’s a real honor to know that our judges trust what CASA has to say, that they trust our training and our equipping of our volunteers,” said Swedburg.
Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Lisa McCormick weighed in on the news, saying in part, “The CASA program serves a critical role in the child welfare system. CASA provides children in foster care with a powerful voice in court and a consistent, caring adult during a time of uncertainty.”
With this expansion, CASA for Kids is in need of volunteers.
