Texas governor signs bill mandating warning labels on certain food additives

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a series of bills into law on Sunday, including Texas Senate Bill 25, which mandates that food manufacturers place warning labels on products containing specific additives.

The legislation aligns with the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.

The bill aims to restrict over 40 additives and dyes, some of which are not allowed in other countries.

Products containing these substances must either display a warning label or alter their ingredients.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick expressed optimism about the bill’s potential impact on public health.

“By promoting exercise and educating the public about how damaging ultra-processed foods can be, we can make a positive difference in Texans’ lives,” Patrick said in a statement.

However, some El Paso residents remain cautious.

Evan Carter commented, “They’re trying to use legalese to get around the fact that they’re just not giving healthy ingredients.”

Another El Paso resident, Frank Mieles, shared his skepticism about the initiative’s effectiveness.

“I think even, yeah, I’m skeptical whether they can do all the changes that they propose. This is a start. But yeah, let’s say I’ll be glad if more positives come out,” Mieles said.

Food manufacturers will be required to comply with the new labeling or ingredient change requirements by 2027.
