LMPD is asking parents to talk to their children about playing with realistic looking fake guns. At LMPD’s bi-weekly press conference, Deputy Chief Ryan Bates shared pictures of children, one as young as 9 years old, playing with realistic looking fake guns.Police say they have received calls from people about kids riding on bicycles wearing masks and carrying the fake guns around. Bates says these fake guns bring a few concerns.”One of our concerns with this would be misidentification either by law enforcement or by an armed civilian,” Bates says. “Also you can generate some public concern that can prompt calls for service.” LMPD encourages parents to have conservations with their kids about the fake guns, in order to prevent unnecessarily putting kids in danger. In addition to having conversations, LMPD asks that parents check their kid’s phones and social media to make sure they are not using these fake guns.
