Almost 300 bikes given out to kids through Ivy Tech annual giveaway

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Several lucky kids are riding around on free bikes today.

Ivy Tech gave away 270 bikes to elementary and middle school students today as part of the EVSC’s summer programs.

School officials say the program is a reward for students for good attendance and good behavior.

In addition to a free bike, kids walked away with a helmet and bike lock.

Organizers say this is the 22nd year of the event, and the kids’ reactions are always the best part.

“I had a grandparent over here and his grandson got a bike. He got up, gave me a big hug said, ‘You don’t even understand the difference this is gonna make for this young person,’ but I think what’s important isn’t the bike itself; it’s the act of someone giving them a bicycle,” says Chris Kiefer, EVSC school board member. “That somebody cares enough to give them a bicycle, I think that’s the big thing.“

Officials say this event wouldn’t be possible without the support of local donors, businesses and organizations.
