2 charged for fire that killed mom and 2 kids in North Philly: Officials

A family member of the mom killed along with two of her young kids in a a fire on June 13 in Strawberry Mansion has been charged with murder in the case, along with another man, officials said.

The two taken into custody have been identified as 67-year-old Charles Sumpter and 44-year-old Fleitte Newell, officials said.

The fire broke out on Friday, June 13, at the 2500 block of North Corlies Street, killing 32-year-old Ashley Thompson, who was eight months pregnant at the time, along with 6-year-old Assad Thompson and 4-year-old Alaya Thompson-Newell.

A 54-year-old woman and a two-year-old were also inside the home at the time, but were able to escape out the window.
