WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Southeastern Housing Foundation donated over $8,000 to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to help feed those in need.
Roxann Lansdowne, the executive director of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, said this donation will help them combat food insecurity.
“We are in a food desert; we’re sitting right in it,” Lansdowne said. “Which means most of these clients do not have a way or the means to provide enough food on a monthly basis for their families.”
Though, with high grocery prices, Lansdowne also said this donation will help the food bank’s ability to meet the needs of all the clients they serve.
“Anybody who grocery shops already knows the cost of groceries, so if we serve 450 families a week, all you have to do is do your multiplication tables,” Lansdowne said.
The money will be used towards buying food from local grocery stores and will help with rent.
The President of the Housing Foundation of Southeastern North Carolina said the funding couldn’t have come at a better time for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.
“We didn’t know that we were going to be providing this money after the county commissioners decided they were cutting funds,” Jody Waino said.
Lansdowne accepted the money and reminded the community Mother Hubberd’s Cupboard isn’t going anywhere.
“We have such terrific volunteers and support from the community,” said Lansdowne. “We aren’t going anywhere.”
