MILTON, Vt. (WCAX) – With another round of sweltering temperatures Tuesday, many Vermonters were finding ways to beat the heat. That included in Milton, where the fire department broke out a power hose to help local kids cool down.
“I like this because on a hot day you can just run in the water and cool yourself off,” said Charlie Thomas of Milton, who along with his family, was among those who stopped by the Milton Fire Department to get doused.
“Well, it is definitely cool that they only do this once a year — which I think is refreshing that they do it on very hot days,” Thomsa said.
Those who don’t have a choice to get out of the scorching sun — like construction workers — must take extra safety precautions. “We plan ahead just to talk to each other. You know, usually we see it in the forecast coming. Tell them, ‘Hey, you are going to want to stay hydrated. Make sure you take breaks in the A/C when you need them,” said Dylan Fortin with S.D. Ireland.
And a word of caution from veterinarians — keep your furry friends off the pavement. Experts say on a 90-degree day, the pavement can exceed 140 degrees. And if your pets do stay inside, keep the A/C or fan on, give them extra water, and lay low during the day.
“Their activity and ours should be the morning and the evening. A lot of times, the guideline is say before 9 or 10 a.m. Get those walks in, get that activity and have an ability for them to cool off. Then, wait until the evening, until after 6 or 7 p.m,” said Dr. Karen Bradley with Onion River Animal Hospital.
Many municipal swimming pools open for the season
Kids also beat the heat Tuesday at Lebanon’s Veterans Memorial Pool.
Anyone is welcome from anywhere, though daily admissions fees are reduced for city residents. The pool is open until 7 p.m.
Many families have been coming for years, especially on sweltering days. “It’s fun because you get cold and you are not hot anymore,” said Caroline Knittle, age 10.
“Today is like really, really hot and it’s just hot,” said Jack, Caroline’s brother.
The pool director says more lifeguards were added to the schedule this week so they could rotate them out more often.
The pool is open daily until mid-August. Dogs are welcome to come and cool off on the very last day of the season.
