Kids 2 College Furniture leases part of former Conlin’s

Kids 2 College Furniture is joining Montgomery’s in the former Conlin’s Furniture space.

The retailer, which specializes in furnishings for infants through college students, is leasing about 9,000 square feet of the building at 1703 W. 41st St.

“I think it’s going to be a good partnership,” said Traci Cavanaugh, who opened Kids 2 College Furniture in 2008. The business moved in 2017 to its current location on the south side of the Western Mall, 2101 W. 41st St.

“I think it’s going to have a lot better visibility, and the building is going to look great. I’m really excited about all the changes and partnering with Montgomery’s next door.”

Kids 2 College Furniture carries cribs and toddler beds, with fun additions including tents and slides, as well as commercial grade bunk beds and lofted beds.

“Our focus is furniture that can be used for all ages and lasts,” Cavanaugh said. “It’s more durable.”

The store will gain a little more space, but the biggest benefits are visibility and co-location, she said. There’s a personal tie too — her daughter is a designer at Montgomery’s.

“It was lucky, and the timing was just perfect,” she said. “We knew we wanted to move and this became available, and timing was everything.”

The Montgomery’s expansion will connect the Conlin’s space with its existing building and allow for more inventory — especially geared toward a range of budgets — and an enlarged design studio.

Signing a tenant in the same industry but with different products “is a great complement,” Montgomery’s president Eric Sinclair said. “I think it will continue to drive more traffic having more like businesses in a similar area, so I’m super-excited for the partnership.”

Montgomery’s designers have some projects requiring cribs, for instance, so there could be synergies, he said.

“It will be beneficial for both our businesses,” he said.

Both retailers plan to open in the Conlin’s space at the same time — likely either late August or early September depending on construction.

“I just think it’s nice to have two long-term, locally owned businesses working together to have an impact,” Sinclair said. “I just think it will continue to draw people to that 41st Street corridor. There’s a lot of good things that are happening.”
