KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A woman and three children are in serious condition following a crash that shut down Kauai’s Kaumualiʻi Highway Saturday morning.
According to the Kauai Police Department (KPD), at approximately 10:30 a.m., a 29-year-old woman was traveling eastbound on Kaumualiʻi Highway with five children, when the vehicle crossed the center line and hit a tree on the westbound shoulder.
First responders arrived on scene and found the 29-year-old Kekaha woman unconscious. All six occupants were extracted from the vehicle and transported to hospital.
KPD said the driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Oahu’s Queen’s Medical Center.
Three of the children were transferred to Oahu’s Kapiʻolani Medical Center in serious condition, while two were treated and released from Wilcox Medical Center.
As a result of the crash, Kaumualiʻi Highway was shut down in both directions for about 1,5 hours while officers conducted an on-scene investigation.
At this time, police said speed and impairment do not appear to be contributing factors, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Officer Himongala at (808) 241-1617.
