‘Toppling Hunger’ cereal drive will help restock De Pere food pantry, and others

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – We’re halfway through our “Toppling Hunger” cereal drive.

Your donations of cereal will go to 15 nonprofits in our area.

One of the organizations that will receive this cereal is De Pere Christian Outreach’s food pantry.

De Pere Christian Outreach works closely with the De Pere school district, and donations of cereal are crucial as students in need aren’t getting access to free breakfasts during summer break.

“Each week we give out about 75 boxes of cereal to families. Some of our larger families may get two boxes,” executive director Amy Murphy said. “It’s so vital to have that be part of our food delivery each week because it’s easy to make and it’s a staple in households.”

The operations manager told us the number of people using the pantry has increased steadily since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, more than 14,000 families received food from the pantry.

“Our food pantry need is so high. It keeps growing. It’s grown since COVID. It’s gone up steadily. We used to serve about 100 families per week, and that got to be too much for our staff and with logistics, and that’s why we made the decision to serve families twice a month.”

You can bring boxes of unopened cereal that hasn’t reached its best-by date to the WBAY Building lobby at 115 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Green Bay or every Fox Communities Credit Union location through Monday, June 30.

You’ll even see some friendly faces on June 30 as the Action 2 News This Morning crew will come right out to your car at the curb to collect your donations.
