(Seguin) — Summer is all about new experiences, and one local camp is making it easy for kids of all skill levels to dive into the world of music.
Texas Lutheran University will be hosting its annual 2025 CMA Summer Music Camp from July 14 -18 for kids in grades 2 through 6th.
The camp that week will include a Strings Camp from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a Vocal Arts Camp from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
Shareen Vader, TLU community music academy director, says the university is hoping to draw even more children to the camps this summer. She says no prior experience is needed. Plus, she says it is the perfect first step into music for children who have never picked up an instrument or sung in group.
“Both of the camps center around letting the students experience No. 1, either playing the instrument or learning to sing. They will learn songs that they can play. In fact, they get to perform at the end of the week. They do a little mini performance for the parents and the family,” said Vader.
Vader says the camp is a great way for kids to begin learning the art of music or perfecting the skills they already have. In fact, she says they’ll have so much fun throughout the week that learning will be made easy.
“During those times that they are in their camp, they are rotating. They are either going to sessions –learning the songs that they are going to perform, learning how to play the instrument or how to sing the song. Then they also break into sessions where they learn some things about how to read music. There are some games and activities and craft time. So, they are constantly rotating. It’s not like they are just going to have to play an instrument or sing the entire time. They are learning other things that help them and just expose them to music and having fun,” said Vader.
Vader says they have also designed the camps so that children didn’t have to choose one from the other.
“We do have quite a few students that attend both camps so that way they can participate the entire day. Parnets can drop them off in the morning and pick them up at 5 o’clock or they can also pick them up at lunch and do lunch with their children. Either way, if they do stay on campus for lunch, they are supervised and there’s some activities to keep them entertained in between the two camps,” said Vader.
The cost of the one-week camp is $125. Discounts are available for current students or those with multiple children.
Registration is open now through July 14. To sign up or to learn more details visit www.tlucma.org.
