Lisa Weller, Twirl Salon stylists share their journey in fashion and beauty

SAN ANTONIO – The Met Gala is a major event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and celebrates fashion as an art form. Every year, celebrities and designers come together to create looks based on a specific theme.

One of those unforgettable looks? Zoe Saldaña’s striking bob complemented the night’s theme. Behind that transformation is hairstylist Mara Roszak and her assistant, Lisa Weller, a San Antonio-based hairstylist.

Lisa worked closely with Mara and designer Thom Browne; the team crafted a sleek bob wig that complemented the lines and beading of Zoe’s gown.

“Creating the super-strong line with the bangs that framed Zoe’s face was a deliberate choice to match the dress. Mara cut the shape, and we prepped everything on a mannequin before Zoe even arrived,” she shared. “It was so fun to watch people online react like she’d actually cut her hair.”

The day of the Gala brought some rain, but that didn’t stop the show from going on.

“I got soaking wet getting to the venue, definitely not the way you want to start your Met day. But when you’re in the room, seeing Zoe put on the dress, and the final touches come together, it’s a pinch-me moment.”

After starting her career locally, she trained under iconic hairstylist Guido Palau, traveling to Fashion Weeks in Paris, Milan, and London.

“Eventually, I opened Twirl Salon here in San Antonio

“We all share clients here. One person might color the hair, another might cut it, another style it. One day, a client left and said, ‘Thanks, team,’ and that’s exactly it, we win together.”

Her mission goes beyond glam; it’s about empowerment.

“Here, we show them they can make a great living, be financially independent, and feel proud of their careers.”

Lisa trains her team of stylists to deliver red carpet looks in San Antonio.

“This job should be fun. It’s beauty, it’s creativity, but it’s also about precision, professionalism, and creating an experience where every client feels seen and celebrated.”

Alex, who has worked at Twirl for over six years, says, “Working under someone who’s been in the industry for 25 years and is still reaching new milestones is so inspiring.”

Jade, who has been at Twirl for 14 years, says the salon’s culture of mentorship has been key to her growth. “It’s life-changing to find a career and a mentor who really guides you,” she says. “I’ve been able to travel with clients, do makeup for special events, and even get people ready for front row at Paris Fashion Week.”

Karla, another hairstylist at Twirl Salon, is preparing to head to Paris Fashion Week, shares her experience. “You can travel for work. We’ve done weddings in Boston, in Miami. We’ve done a private fashion show here, the whole nine yards,” she says, “It’s amazing.”

Lisa Weller and the team at Twirl Salon show that with ongoing training and a passion for the craft, it’s possible to achieve your goals.
