Don’t do it: Leaving kids or pets in hot cars

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – It takes only minutes for a car to heat up and become deadly for a pet or child.

That’s why it’s so important in this weather to double-check before you lock up your car.

A child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult and animals like dogs don’t have sweat glands, so their body temperatures can rise even faster than a human’s during hot weather.

Hannah Page with the Capital Area Humane Society says, while people might think a quick outing with your pet would be fine, it could be dangerous.

“Today it’s over 90 degrees, in ten minutes a car can reach 120 degrees. All it takes for 15-minutes for your pet to start suffering turns into heat exhaustion, which turns into heat stroke, and that could be deadly,” said Page.

Parents of fur babies and human babies should never leave a child or pet in the car alone for any length of time. Check your entire car before locking the doors and walking away.

Store personal items, even car keys or bags, near the child or pet. And bystanders or childcare providers make the call to parents or 911 if something seems wrong.

Last year, 39 children died of heatstroke in cars. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, that’s up 35% from 2023
