Brewer’s Summer Lunch Program provides free meals for kids

BREWER, Maine (WABI) – The Summer Food Service Program kicked off in Brewer on Monday, and local youth are keeping cool in the heat while enjoying a free meal.

This is the thirteenth year of partnership with Good Shepard Food Bank to provide free summer meals for youth under 18 years old.

Norumbega Park in Brewer is one of three sites in the Bangor area where kids can enjoy nutritious meals and have fun on a splash pad, play basketball, and other outdoor activities.

The program supports families struggling with food insecurity and provides an outlet for kids to socialize while they’re out of school on summer break.

“It’s really important for our families because, you know, food stamps have gotten cut, and programs have been cut, and this just really helps out our families to get their kids to have a lunch and then get to be social after,” said Janet Maddo, program coordinator for Brewer’s Summer Lunch Program.

According to Feeding America, recent statistics show that Maine has the highest rate of child food insecurity in New England and the Free Summer Lunch Program is a significant effort in decreasing the number of children facing hunger in the state.

The Rock Church and Fairmount School will also have sites providing meals for kids starting this month.
