Omaha restaurants send food to Baton Rouge senior home for LSU finals watch party

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – If you weren’t in Omaha for the college world series finals game, the closest you could come to the real experience was at St. James Place – a senior living facility in Baton Rouge.

Tonya Dixon, with the St. James Place, said they did their own version of Rocco’s famous jello-shot competition the last time LSU was in the College World Series was in 2023. This year, they upped their game and made it a competition between the four residential buildings. Dixon says she wanted to make it feel just like Omaha, so she called Rocco’s Pizza directly and asked if they would be willing to send some pies for their watch party. Rocco’s agreed, and even got Omaha Steaks on board to ship the food.

“This is what our friends from Baton Rouge are eating while they’re in the stadium, so they wanted our residents to eat the same thing here, while they’re watching the game,” Dixon said.

Deanna Dyson-Ashworth went to the LSU lab school in 1944. She’s a lifelong fan of the Tigers and now lives at St. James Place with her husband. Dyson-Ashworth and almost every other resident dressed for their own college World Series watch party.

“Omaha has been very kind to everybody in Louisiana, we appreciate it big time, we really do,” Dyson-Ashworth said. “Rocco’s pizza was excellent. I have yet to get the Omaha hamburger, but I know I will.”

The residents and their visitors had a spread of burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and, of course, jello shots. There was not a single frown or empty stomach in the room.
