MONTICELLO – The Leadership Sullivan Class of 2025 has announced a new initiative to fight food insecurity across Sullivan County. Besides one in Monticello, they’ve launched the Little Free Food Pantries in Liberty, White Lake, Narrowsburg, and Glen Spey.

The pantries are open 24 hours a day and located in areas with high need. They aim to provide easy access to food and are built and maintained through community partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteers. The project supports the work of existing local food providers, and it offers immediate, dignified, and anonymous assistance to individuals and families in need.

The Leadership Sullivan Class of 2025 President, Jen Jensen, presented Dr. Peter Chester, the President of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue in Monticello, with a gift card for allowing them to place a kosher pantry at the school. “This is a gift card for $200 to maintain the pantry until that community support comes up,” Jenson said.

Dr. Chester said, “Thank you very, very much. We clip coupons, and this will go a very, very long way. A lot of people are going to have something on their table more than they would normally have because of this generosity.”

The Leadership Sullivan program helps young professionals grow their leadership abilities. It does this through educational programs designed to increase their understanding of the county. Lori Orestano-James helped facilitate the pantry project.

“They’re young, energetic professionals who really do want to make a difference,” she said.  “They’ve become ambassadors for Sullivan County.”

Kathy Kreiter, Director of the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless, said that food kiosks like these can help fill in the blanks.

“We’re not always open on the weekends, but people are hungry every day. So I think this is huge. And I thank you guys so much.”
