The local chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America came out in force Saturday for “Patriotic packing for the 4th of July” — that is, getting care packages ready to send to U.S. troops overseas just in time for the holiday.Commander Michael Power was among those at Kirtland Air Force Base cheering on the BSM volunteers.”It’s going to make our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marine guardians overseas feel important, feel remembered on days like this, where they’re serving our country overseas and away from their families,” Power said.Power said that in the two years he has served as commander, he has seen the close relationship between the Blue Star Mothers and Kirtland, which reflects the close ties between New Mexicans and the large military presence in the state.”Albuquerque is very supportive of the military community,” Power said. “We have tens of thousands of veterans in the greater Albuquerque/New Mexico region, so it’s great to see such a great turnout for an event that supports our troops.”
