Blue Ash’s Summit Park hosts 13th annual Cincinnati Food Truck Association Food Fest amid sweltering heat

With the temperature rising under the hot sun, Bobby Gold sweats over the grill of his Best Thing Smoking food truck.”A lot of fans. We bring a lot of fans out here,” Gold said. From the sizzling to the flame broiled, both on the smokers and on the grill, the heat is soaring on this second day of summer. Gold said he and his team are making the best of it as the Cincinnati Food Truck Association Food Fest rolls through Blue Ash’s Summit Park. CFTA President Amy Flottemsch said that the 50 food truck operators love taking part in the annual event. “It is a great event. It is an event that we look forward to every year,” Flottemsch said. “It features all of our trucks that are members of the Cincinnati Food Truck Association, and it gives the opportunity for great exposure and marketing for their business, and people can just come out and have a great time.” For the food venders and restauranteurs, the challenge between serving up hot and fresh and staying cool is an important recipe.Chris Hopkins of Holly Donuts said that staying cool in the heat remains a persistent challenge throughout the day as he serves up desserts.“Air conditioning,” Hopkins said. “I have little neck coolers. I jump in front of the misting fan every now and then and do the best we can to stay cool.”While it may get to over 100 degrees in some of the trucks, Brittany Griffin of the city of Blue Ash says that the wide lawn and overcast, shady trees help make Summit Park the perfect place to host the 13th year of the annual gathering.“We have dining tents here in the grass pad that provide shade for when you grab a bite to eat, and we also have a multi-colored canopy that provides shade as well,” Griffin said.Ice cream and frozen dishes are favorites for customers, delighting in the great taste and cool treats, escaping the hot kitchen at home. That freedom is what Flottesmsch said is part of the appeal for these four-wheeled entrepreneurs.“The unique ability of a food truck is to kind of be able to go wherever you want us to be,” Flottesmsch said. “And we can go to your business, we can go to a park, we can go to your home for private parties, all sorts of things.”With the table set, the CFTA Food Fest mixes hospitality and relief from the heat, serving up the best of the summer one flavor at a time while trying to stay cool.“We keep it ventilated,” Gold said. “We keep the windows open, we keep the doors open just to keep some wind coming through. That’s all we can do.” The event runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday at Summit Park. More information about the food fest can be found here.
