Three Square Food bank projects thousands of more people to be food insecure this year

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – This summer, there will be more Southern Nevada families who will go hungry than years before, according to Three Square Food Bank’s newest report.

FOX5 visited the food bank earlier this June where we saw volunteers busy packing meals for those who need it the most.

“We just want to make sure no one in our community goes hungry. Of course, it really breaks my heart every time you are seeing those numbers because it really should be zero,” said Sheena Skelton, the registered dietician at Three Square.

However, the number of residents going hungry is nowhere near zero.

Three Square Food Bank said this year 377,270 Southern Nevada residents are food insecure, which is a 35,790 increase.

“That jump is really shocking to anyone. To really know that we have so many people in our own community that are experiencing hunger. That uncertainty of not knowing where your next meal will come from,” Skelton said.

Three Square says among those going hungry are children.

Which is why they have partnered with the Library District for their meet up and eat up program.

“Last year alone we served over 2,300 meals just during the summer months,” said Melissa Sanchez the Children’s Department Head for Spring Valley Library.

Sanchez said she has noticed more families come in for the meal programs since the school year ended.

“A lot of times, their parents go to work. If they are home by themselves, who is going to cook a meal for them? So we offer that kind of meal service for them,” Sanchez said.

The meet up and eat up program is not only for children, but the Library District also offers it for seniors as well.

However, timing and days the meals served varies by each library.
