LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – With a bill close to passing that would ban sodas and candy under Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, one representative states that it is about time.
Senate Bill 379 aims to eliminate unhealthy items such as sugary drinks, candy and chips from being purchased with SNAP benefits.
Lawmakers believe this bill will support the original intent of the program: to provide nutritious food to low-income individuals and families. However, not everyone agrees with this approach.
Some raise concerns about the bill’s impact, suggesting it may not tackle the root causes of poor nutrition; however, District 42 Representative Richard Raymond says he’s been pushing for the bill for a decade.
He stated, “We’re talking about government dollars, tax dollars. We’re giving it to people, which I am totally in favor of, but what I have supported is actually making sure that we help them buy healthy foods.” Raymond continued, “If we can get kids to start at a very young age, especially young people, to learn to eat healthy, and not to be drinking sugary sugary drinks, it’s gonna be something that’ll help them for the rest of their lives.”
The bill is currently awaiting the governor’s signature. If approved, it will become effective on September 1.
