Feather River Food Co-op reports it is currently experiencing significant product outages and a drop in sales due to a cyberattack that disrupted the operations of United Natural Foods Inc., one of the co-op’s primary distributors. This widespread incident has affected grocery retailers across the United States, including major chains like Whole Foods and Kroger as well as many independent and cooperative grocery stores.
The disruption, which began earlier this month, has limited UNFI’s ability to process and fulfill orders. While the co-op has resumed submitting regular orders, only about 40% are currently being fulfilled. This partial service has led to extremely limited availability of essential grocery categories at both Feather River Food Co-op locations, most notably in the dairy, meat, frozen food and beverage categories.
“Our shelves are bare in many departments, and this is not due to poor planning or oversight — it’s a direct result of a major breakdown in our supply chain,” said Ross MacNeil, outreach coordinator for the co-op. “We want our shoppers and our community to know that we’re doing everything we can to get products back on the shelves.”
The sales impact has already been significant. Feather River Food Co-op saw a decrease in weekly sales of approximately $6,200 compared to the previous week, and is now trailing about 5.5% behind last year’s sales at this time.
The co-op team is actively seeking alternative sources and working with other suppliers to fill the gaps in product availability. In the meantime, customers may continue to see reduced selection in many areas of the store.
“We appreciate our community’s patience and continued support as we work through this challenge. We’re committed to transparency, resilience and doing what’s necessary to serve our members and the greater public,” MacNeil said.
