‘Maximum Football’ review: New free-to-play video game is worth checking out

Maximum Football comes at a time when video game fans are getting ready to buy EA Sports College Football 26 and Madden NFL 26. After being available on Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, the free-to-play football video game is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Stream. Maximum Entertainment worked with the fans to put the game together. It shows in a big way, providing plenty of features to satisfy gamers on all levels.

Because EA Sports has dominated the football video game market over the last decade-plus, making a video game outside the EA brand can be challenging. That leads to the question of does Maximum Football provides quality gameplay.

With the help of Unreal Engine 5, Maximum Football provides solid gameplay, despite not being up to the same level as Madden or College Football. It can get a little choppy at times, but overall it’s a smooth experience that is enjoyable.

I also liked the overall presentation of the game. The announcers sound strong, the introductions are solid and the game also provides different weather conditions such as snow and rain. The different weather conditions give the game a nice look, but it didn’t seem to impact the players like in other football video games.

Because Maximum Football doesn’t have official licensing from the NCAA or the NFL, real names are not used, but the developers pay homage to the teams fans see on the weekends. One of the teams in the game is called the Peachville Pitbulls from Athens, Georgia. College football fans would see that and know that is similar to the Georgia Bulldogs.

There are 130 college teams to choose from, and players can make deep customizations to give it their own touch. That’s huge, and it makes the game entertaining as you can customize logos, helmets, playbooks and stadiums.

Maximum Football provides a dynasty mode where a player can control a college team and try to win multiple championships. What I like about Dynasty Mode is having complete control of the team, and by that, I mean finances, stadium improvements, merchandise, food and anything related to the team and university. You can also make adjustments to the schedule, conferences and the playoffs to make it a personal college football experience.

Will the new video game be a hit for fans?

There is another feature in the game called Maximum Pro League which is similar to Madden Ultimate Team. While some fans are not into that feature, I like playing around with it, and Maximum Football‘s version is similar in terms of buying packs of cards to get the best players to put on a custom roster.

One thing about this feature that stood out is fans can buy different stadiums to play in. The stadiums in Maximum Football come in different shapes and sizes, but the developers got creative and gave players the ability to play at places like an aircraft carrier.

There is a franchise mode that allows gamers to play through a professional season against 31 teams. That mode is not available yet as developers will continue to work on the game despite it being fully launched.

Maximum Football provides fans with a football video game they want to play. It’s not on the same level as the EA Sports games, but I don’t think it’s trying to be. Maximum Entertainment seems to be all about providing fans an unique football gaming experience, and Maximum Football does that. And with it being a free game, fans of football video games will enjoy playing Maximum Football as they get ready for the football season.
