MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WNDU) – There were several Juneteenth events in Michiana today, including one that our multimedia journalist John Beomsoo Kim attended in Michigan City.
The event began around noon Central Time, featuring various foods from vegan burgers to smoothies, along with various game booths and entertainment.
This year, the Michigan City municipality organized the festival for the first time, marking a milestone in celebrating the so-called Fourth of July for Black people.
People of all ages attended and some that we talked with said it’s important to remember the events that shaped this country.
Referring to today’s event as a history lesson, Iyyze Kafrika from Michigan City said he’s grateful that the Juneteenth celebration is being more recognized not only by Black people but also by people from various backgrounds and city government.
“Take away from today is that you can sell things, make money, and contribute it back to the community,” added Kafrika.
Donnita Scully, who’s been volunteering for the NAACP LaPorte County Branch for more than 15 years, said Juneteenth should not only celebrate the freed slaves but also make people united.
“We have to understand that, number one, there’s unity here. And then where there’s unity, there’re strengths,” said Scully.
The event is expected to last until 9:30 p.m. Central Time.
