Indoor activities for kids around Indianapolis to avoid brutal heat

Kids are on summer break, but extreme heat can make playing outside hard. Here are some indoor activities to beat the heat.

INDIANAPOLIS — Brutal summer heat is baking central Indiana, with the humidity making it feel like it’s over 100 degrees. With kids on summer break, that means many parents are looking for activities to keep kids entertained without relying on screen time. 

The good news is, central Indiana has lots of options for keeping kids entertained indoors: from water parks to sandboxes, play places to museums. 

13News went searching for options that can keep you cool while having fun around central Indiana. In no particular order, here is a list of ideas, what they have, when they are open and how much they cost. 

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

The world’s largest Children’s Museum is in Indy, and it’s full of activities for kids, from toddlers to tweens. Current exhibits include the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Dinosphere, Ruth E. Carter: Afrofruturism in Costume Design, and the Playscape®. Get directions. 

Hours: Everyday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Cost: About $35 for adults, $30 for youth (Indiana residents get a $3 discount)

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

The IMS Museum just finished a complete remodel in time for this year’s Indy 500, which is good since it is inside the track. It features priceless artifacts, historic cars and a new “Starting Grid Experience” to give you the feeling of being at the starting line for the 500. Get directions.

Hours: Everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Cost: $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, $18 for veterans and kids ages 16-to-5. Kids under 5 get in free. 


Indiana State Museum

The Indiana State Museum by the downtown canal holds exhibits aimed at everyone from children through adults. Current exhibits include the Museum Marvels collection, the Amazing Pollinators survival quest, and displays of fossils from Ice Age mammoths to sea monsters from before the age of dinosaurs. Get directions. 

Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Cost: $23 for adults, $21 for seniors, $17 for kids ages 17-to-3

Indy Island Aquatic Center

The Indy Island Aquatic Center is run by IndyParks on the east side of Indianapolis. It features a leisure pool, water playhouse, large water slide and swimming lessons for kids. Get directions.

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

Cost: $5 for adults, $4 for kids ages 2 to 17

NCAA Hall of Champions

The NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis features exhibits about every sponsored NCAA sport, highlights and artifacts from colleges nationwide, sports simulators and a 1930s retro gymnasium. Get directions.

Hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

Cost: $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5 for kids ages 5 to 18, free for younger kids

Slick City Action Park

Slick City is a dry slide park, letting you slip and slide without changing into a swimsuit. The Brownsburg location has a ton of slides, along with a junior jungle climbing tower, sport air court and acrobat alley. Get directions. 

Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays

Cost: $32 for a two-hour session for anyone ages 4 and up

Dig Dig Indoor Sandbox

This location in Fishers calls itself Indiana’s largest indoor sandbox for kids. It has a massive sandbox for kids to play in, complete with lots of toys. There is also the Dino Zone, which is a calm area for kids and adults to have fun with kinetic sand. Get directions. 

Hours: Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Cost: $16 an hour per child

Smiley Indoor Playground

Located next to Castleton Square Mall, Smiley Indoor Playground is a huge building with everything from ball pits to a trampoline basketball court, an obstacle course to an arcade. It caters to younger kids, up to 10 years old. Get directions.

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. , Friday and Sunday from 11 a.m. through 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m.

Cost: Prices vary but start at $13 an hour for kids 2 and under, $16 and hour for kids 3 to10, adults with the older kids will need to pay $9.
