COLTON’S POINT, Md. — This summer, young artists in Southern Maryland can roll up their sleeves and get creative at St. Clement’s Island Museum. The popular Art Kids program is back with a fresh lineup of hands-on workshops that blend fine arts instruction with regional inspiration.

This year’s theme is “Southern Maryland Animals Great and Small.” Each class runs from noon to 3 p.m. and includes a completed work of art to be featured in a public exhibit during Children’s Day at the Museum on Aug. 17, 2025.

The program, open to children ages 7 to 17, includes four themed workshops led by local instructor Ellen Duke Wilson. Each three-day session introduces participants to artistic techniques such as sketching, painting, collage and sculpture — all while highlighting the beauty of the region.

Each session is designed for all skill levels — no prior art experience is required. Students will explore how creative expression can make a positive impact while building confidence through the arts.

2025 Class Schedule:

  • Sketching: Drawing Inspiration from Nature – June 24, 25, 26
  • Painting: Crabs and Other River Creatures – July 8, 9, 10
  • Collage: Assembling Animals – July 22, 23, 24
  • Sculpting: Build a Bird – Aug. 5, 6, 7

The fee is $5 per child, and all materials are provided. Participants should bring a light snack. Pre-registration is required.

To sign up, call the museum office at 301-769-2222 or contact Christina Barbour at 301-769-4723.
