
Summer officially starts tomorrow, and that means lazy, hazy, crazy days, trips to the beach or pool (if you’re lucky), and bored, cranky kids by the 4th of July. But not to worry. The Lowell Summer Music Series and Worcester’s Hanover Theatre and Conservatory have you covered with free concerts and more.
Starting next week, Free Fun for Kids, the LSMS kids’ program, kicks off with two free shows each week in Boarding House Park, starting July 9 through Aug. 14, with a week off for the Lowell Folk Festival at the end of July.
Popular acts like Dino Guy, Curious Creatures, and Yo-Yo Guy return, and there are new offerings, including Animal Craze, a baby animal petting zoo. Plus, there are arts and crafts, free books, snacks, organized play groups and trolley rides to make a fun-filled morning for kids and their families to relax and unwind in downtown Lowell. Hanover Theatre and Conservatory is in the midst of a busy June and the fun and activity continue in July and August. The THTC Youth Acting Company brings the popular musical Grease to the BrickBox Theater for four performances, this weekend June 20-22, and music fans can rock out to Voyage, the world’s top Journey tribute band, on the Hanover’s mainstage, June 27. The summer box office hours are now in effect through Labor Day. It’s open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until 30 minutes after curtain time on performance nights. On weekends with performances, it’s open from noon until 30 minutes after curtain time unless otherwise noted.

A CLASSIC: Ogunquit Playhouse announces the full cast and creative team for “Guys and Dolls,” a Broadway classic, playing June 19-July 19 at the southern Maine playhouse. It is directed and choreographed by Al Blackstone and will star the previously announced Tony Award nominee Rob McClure (Broadway’s Mrs. Doubtfire) as Nathan Detroit, Tony Award nominee Ephraim Sykes (Broadway’s Ain’t Too Proud) as Sky Masterson, Bianca Marroquín (Broadway’s Chicago) as Miss Adelaide, and María Bilbao (Broadway’s Sweeney Todd) as Sarah Brown. A mini review will be in Stages next week. Open Captioning for deaf and hard of hearing guests will be projected on monitors flanking the stage from July 9-13.
