Go Green Summer Activities for the Kids

By Tom Last

Summer 2025 is upon us and it’s a perfect time to prepare an eco-friendly activities list for kids. These activities will help stimulate your children’s minds, teach them about the environment, provide plenty of fun and create lasting memories. See the following list of activities below.

Birdwatching Adventure – Make binoculars from toilet paper rolls (check-out YouTube DIY video “Toilet Paper Roll Binoculars Craft” or other DIY videos) and then identify the different birds in the neighborhood. You can use a free app like “Merlin Bird ID” to identity the birds. Whoever finds the most species of birds wins a prize!

Backyard Camping – Pitch a tent in your yard for a night of storytelling and yard activities. Include a movie night using a projector and screen/sheet. This is a low energy and low-cost event plus it’s great for family bonding.

Nature Scavenger Hunt – Send kids to the backyard to find rocks, pinecones, and leaves. Identify the leaves with free Leafsnap app and create a collage on cardboard or construction paper. Paint the rocks. Or send them to the beach to find different shells that they can decorate.

Leaf Rubbing Art – Leaf rubbing art is a simple and fun art activity. All you need are leaves, paper and crayons. You only need to lay your paper over the leaves and then rub the crayon across the paper where the leavers are. For more instructions google “leaf rubbing art.”

Flower Pressing – Press fallen petals in a notebook. Label the different petals.

Stargazing Night – This can be done during the backyard camping or on any clear night. Try to identify constellations. Use a free app like “Star Gazer” or “Night Sky” to identify stars and constellations.

Art Mosaic using Beach Debris – Pick up bottlecaps, straws, and other “safe” debris. Then create some art by gluing the items to oak tag or construction paper. Use paints, glitter and other art supplies to complete your master-piece. This is a creative activity and a good lesson for the kids to learn on beach pollution and about the importance of cleaning the beach.

Flowers and Vegetable Planting – Let each kid plant their own flower or vegetable seedling in a small or mid-sized pot. Teach them how to take care of their plant and let them watch it flourish during the summer.

Twig Picture Frames – Glue twigs around cardboard for frames.

These are just a few activities that you and the kids can enjoy together, plus use your imagination (or the Internet) to create more activities. So, let’s go out and have a fun time with the kids, and at the same time, they learn about the environment.
