IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – Dozens of families enjoyed Tuesday’s summer sun at the Iron Mountain City Park.
Earlier, food service workers from the Breitung Township School District served almost 100 meals to the crowd.
For mother Kamae Anderson, the summer meals program is a help to her family.
“It’s dual purpose and it’s great for moms like me,” Anderson said. “You know, we’re on the go. Just got done with a workout, kids are always hungry. So, it works out great. It’s such a nice time on a nice day, and I heard they even do it when it’s raining so even more kudos to them.”
Rain or shine, Meet Up and Eat Up is back for the summer.
The free lunch to children 18 and younger is funded thanks to a USDA grant.
Unlike previous years, the meals are being held away from Woodland Elementary and Kingsford High School and Middle School to meet the grant’s standards.
Food Service Director Chris Tramontin says families have adapted to the changes.
“The community has been fantastic,” Tramontin said. “Just the way they’re understanding with what’s going on and also just coming and showing up with their kids. It’s great.”
Monday through Friday meals are offered at Iron Mountain City Park and Lake Antoine.
East Kingsford and Quinnesec Parks host meals Tuesday through Thursday.
Tramontin says the program gives an extra boost to families.
“It’s for the kids,” Tramontin said. “The area kids, not just Flivver kids, Mountaineer kids, wherever, it’s for our community. But especially right now, in the tougher economic times and whatnot, to be able to give the kids a free lunch helps mom and dad a little bit too.”
The meal program ends Aug. 8.
