Hawks Hangout: QU Women’s Basketball hosts kids camp

QUINCY (WGEM) -It’s been busy over at Pepsi Arena as the Quincy University Women’s Basketball team held their annual Junior Hawks Camp.

“Really fun! It’s always really energetic in here, it’s a good space to be around, you learn a lot of new things, the coaches are great, everybody is fantastic, it’s really just so much fun and you learn so much,” said 8th grade camper Marlee Kassing.

Over 100 kids signed up for this year’s camp.

QU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ali Schwagmeyer-Belger’s goal was simple, to build skills early on and fall in love with the game.

“It starts at this age group, so if we can get the kids in here at a younger age one, it makes them fall in love with the game a little bit more, it makes them have a connection with our QU players, and it makes them just want to get better I think and they have fun,” Schwagmeyer-Belger said.

Campers like Marlee Kassing have been coming to QU’s Junior Hawks camp for years, a camp that’s worth every penny.

“I’ve improved so much as a player, especially just from coming here. There’s been other multiple camps, but this is probably one of my favorite camps,” Kassing said.

Of course, the campers learn a lot and have fun, but the biggest take away for everyone is the connection the players get to make.

“That’s another joy to see as well, kids attaching to our players here because that’s a huge thing, like in our community, we want kids to come watch us play,” Schwagmeyer-Belger said. “Not only do we want them to watch us play, but we also want them to be like, ‘oh I know her,’ or ‘she taught me this,’ and for us that’s really really important and these camps are super important to be able to start building that connection.”
