SPOKANE, Wash. – Plans are underway for a new Adams Elementary School along with a Boys and Girls Club on Spokane’s South Hill.
Currently, Adams Elementary lacks an after-school program for students in need of a safe, supervised space to study.
School leaders and club staff believe the club will provide essential support outside school hours and assist parents requiring reliable child care.
“So, having a club versus not having a club, is it essentially where these kids go when they aren’t in school or when their parents aren’t available at home for them?” said Wendy Drum, CEO of the Spokane Boys and Girls Club. “And our hours are from 3 to 6 every day. We accommodate parents’ work schedules depending on where the club is located. So, if parents are coming to us saying we don’t get off work until six, we’re going to stay open until seven just to make sure those kids have somewhere to go and somewhere to be when they’re outside of school.”
Design work for the new Adams school was completed as part of a 2015 bond. The project is ready to begin if voters approve the school bond proposed by the Together Spokane initiative this November.
If the bond passes, the district said it will coordinate with students, staff, and families to determine the best start date for construction. The current timeline includes relocating students and staff to Camp Adams at the former Jefferson Elementary during Winter Break 2025.
Construction would begin in early 2026, with completion expected by summer 2027.
