Parilya hosting Filipino food documentary screening and buffet dinner

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Filipino food is having a moment.

Traditional ingredients like ube and calamansi have found their way into the American culinary mainstream, and Filipino restaurants are popping up in cities across the country. The trend has even made its way to Northeast Ohio with the opening of Tita Flora’s in Independence and Parilya in Olmsted Falls, both in 2023.

But how do chefs at establishments like these strike a balance between honoring classic dishes and infusing them with modern sensibilities to appeal to a wider, global audience?

That’s the question at the heart of “Authentic or Not: The Filipino Food Revolution,” a new documentary screening at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Philippine American Cultural and Civic Center, 1975 W. Ridgewood Dr., in Parma.

Hosted by Parilya, the event includes a buffet dinner featuring classic Filipino dishes like lumpia, chicken inihaw, kalderetang kambing (goat stew), cebuchon (rolled lechon), beef sinigang, Filipino spaghetti, ube pandesal and more. Homemade chicharron, with spiced vinegar for dipping, of course, will be available for snacking during the film.

Parilya’s popular food truck will be on site.

Tickets are $33.85 and available through the restaurant’s Facebook page at facebook.com/ParilyaCLE.
