Here are 9 Utah food festivals to savor this summer and fall

Summer and early fall is the perfect time to get out and enjoy some good food, and this list of nine Utah food-centric festivals will help you do just that.

From Italian food to Jamaican, and Greek food to Bavarian, there is a huge variety of cuisines to taste and savor at these nine events, which will all feature Utah businesses and restaurants.

Some of the details about tickets and exact lineups are yet to be revealed, but this list will help you get started on planning your flavor-filled summer and fall.

World Refugee Day

Most of Utah’s big food events are happening later in the summer, but World Refugee Day, on June 20 from 4 to 10 p.m., is a prime opportunity to catch a lot of ethnic food trucks and food booths in one place.

The free event will be at Big Cottonwood Regional Park, at 4300 S. 1300 East in Millcreek. The vendor lineup features several entrepreneurs from the Spice Kitchen Incubator program, which helps refugees, immigrants and low-income individuals start food businesses.

The food trucks that will be at World Refugee Day include Falafel Al Jailawi (Middle Eastern/Iraqi), Jamaica’s Kitchen (Jamaican), Namash Swahili Cuisine (east African), Waterwheel Kitchen (Jordanian/Egyptian/Syrian) and Olive’s Oasis (Mediterranean).

Food booths that will be open for business at the event include Prime Corn (pre-Columbian/pre-Hispanic), Kurdish Katering (Kurdish), Delicius (Venezuelan) and Kente Cafe (west African).

Think of Oktoberfest as a fall festival if you will, but Utah’s two main Oktoberfests actually start in August. In Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird’s Oktoberfest kicks off Aug. 9 and runs every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 12, including Labor Day weekend, which will be the special three-day Grand Oktoberfest Weekend.

SnowWiesn Oktoberfest, at Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville, will begin on Aug. 30, and happen every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 12.

If you’ve never attended, Oktoberfest in Utah is a weekslong family-friendly celebration, with plenty of Bavarian food and, of course, beer.

Snowbird’s Oktoberfest is free to attend. Tickets are required at Snowbasin’s Oktoberfest; they aren’t on sale yet, so keep an eye on the resort’s website.

Utah State Fair

Not much has been announced yet about this year’s Utah State Fair, other than it’s happening Sept. 4-14 at the Utah State Fairpark, at 155 N. 1000 West in Salt Lake City, but it’s always a good time for food lovers.

The fair food selection is off the hook, with all types of deep-fried treats for sale, and there are usually some one-off food events scheduled throughout the duration of the fair. Keep an eye on UtahStateFair.com for more information.

Greek Festival

Put on by Salt Lake City’s Greek Orthodox community, the 49th annual Greek Festival is happening Sept. 5-7 this year, at its usual venue: Holy Trinity Cathedral, at 279 S. 300 West, and in the lot north of the church.

The festival will go from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The Greek Festival is a bona fide feast, with long buffets of Greek food like gyros, spanakopita and keftethes set up to feed attendees. There’s also a separate area where you can pick out Greek sweets.

Admission to the Greek Festival is $5, and children under age 5 are free. Food is priced separately.

Eat Drink SLC

This two-day dining event will be held Sept. 10 and 11 at Tracy Aviary, in the southwest corner of Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park.

Each of the two evenings will feature different local restaurants and craft beverages, along with live music, dance and other performances.

Tickets go on sale in June, and will sell out quickly, according to organizers. For a heads up on when tickets are made available, sign up for the Eat Drink SLC newsletter at EatDrinkSLC.com. Tickets include all food and drinks, signature glassware and live entertainment. Guests must be 21+.

Festa Italiana

If you want to go to Italy but can’t afford a plane ticket, experiencing its food is the next best thing. And one of the best places to do that in Utah is Festa Italiana, happening Sept. 13-14 at The Gateway shopping center in downtown Salt Lake City.

The list of food vendors that will be at this year’s festival include Matteo Ristorante Italiano, Antica Roma, Mastra Italian Bakery, Granato’s, Per Noi Trattoria, Caputo’s, Bacio d’Italia, Sicilia Mia/Antica Sicilia, Pizzeria Tasso, Bartolo’s, Sapori Italian Bakery & Cafe, Fratelli Ristorante, Da Ramalli Pizzeria, and Pinguino’s Gelato.

Italian beer and wine will also be served. Admission to Festa Italiana is free.

SLC VegFest

Whether you’re a longtime vegan or just curious about switching to a plant-based diet, SLC VegFest is for you.

Organized and put on by the Utah Animal Rights Coalition, SLC VegFest is meant to “normalize a vegan diet and spread plant-based eating across Salt Lake City and greater Utah,” said Cody Gillette, who’s on the board of directors and is the master of ceremonies.

The ninth annual SLC VegFest is happening Sept. 13, from noon to 8 p.m., at Library Square, at 200 E. 400 South in Salt Lake City.

Some of the food vendors that will be at the event include Lucky Slice Pizza, Falafel Tree, Namash Swahili Cuisine and Prime Corn, with the full list being announced sometime around August.

Park City Wine Festival

If you’re into wines, the Park City Wine Festival is the place to be this fall.

Happening Oct. 2-4 at different venues and restaurants around the Park City area, the festival will feature grand tastings, paired wine dinners, paired wine adventures and paired wine lunches, all priced and ticketed individually.

On Oct. 3 from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Best of Fest will bring together the best wines of the festival, paired with small bites.

The complete schedule of events is still being rolled out, but you can see a basic rundown at ParkCityWineFest.com.
