City of Newburgh wins award for financial reporting

NEWBURGH – For the third year in a row, the City of Newburgh has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

Newburgh is the only municipality in Orange County and nine cities in the state to earn the recognition.

“We are incredibly pleased the City of Newburgh has attained North America’s most prestigious award for state and local government accounting and financial reporting,” Newburgh City Manager Todd Venning said. “The City Council and I promised our taxpayers complete financial transparency and accountability from their government, and this award confirms we are delivering on that promise. In partnership with the City Council, my administration will continue to undo decades of financial mismanagement and keep Newburgh on the pathway of progress.”

The GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is awarded only to those government entities whose financial reports meet the highest standards of transparency, accuracy, and clarity.

GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program (Budget Awards Program) in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
