With grocery costs higher than ever these days, discount warehouses like Costco are a huge money saver—that is, if you can focus on replenishing your essentials instead of going wild on the snack aisle! While there are many great deals to be had at Costco, these are the five items I never leave without. Coincidentally—I promise—they all start with the letter “P.”
Warning: If you’re triggered by math, please note that you’re not alone. I’m a journalism major, so ‘football math” is as far as I got—I hate the stuff. However, I have done a little basic division to help prove my Costco cost savings. If I got anything wrong, I’m sorry but not surprised.
Mt. Olive Pickles
I used to laugh at my dad for looking at the cost-per-ounce of foods, but now that I’m a grown-up and responsible for my dollars. Meaning: I pay a lot more attention. A 48-oz jar of petite dill pickles costs $4.99 at Costco. At the grocery store, that many pickles would be more than $10 dollars. I leave Costo with at least 3 jars, every time.
Kirkland Pecan Halves
There’s no way around it—nuts are pricey! They sell 2 lb bags of pecan halves at Costco for $12.99. At a regular grocery store, the price of 2 pounds of pecans approaches $24—nearly twice a much!
Swift Pork Tenderloins
I know some folks don’t like to freeze meat, but it’s time to get over it. Costco’s pork tenderloins come 4 to a pack at $3.19 per pound. At many grocery stores, you’re looking at $6 to $8 per pound. I usually buy a package, then cook two and freeze two.
Bibigo Potstickers
If you don’t normally eat potstickers (crescent-shaped Chinese dumplings) then I highly recommend giving them a try. If you do eat them and love them, you know they’re pretty pricey at the grocery—around $6 for 9 ounces. Costco sells a 48-oz. bag of Bibigo Organic Chicken Potstickers for $12.69. The math is more than I want to do right now, but that’s a HUGE savings.

Kirkland Parmesan Cheese
Actually, I’m talking about Parmigiano-Reggiano, to be exact—the fancy Parmesan, direct and officially from Italy. At Costco, you’ll pay $10.99 a pound; the same cheese from Boar’s Head clocks in at a whopping $30 a pound! Ladies and gentlemen, that savings alone is worth a Costco membership!
