‘We learned a lot’: Kids spend the week at Killeen police summer camp

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – Summer is in full swing and kids have been hitting the summer camps.

The summer camp hosted by the Killeen Police Department at Clifton Park Elementary, off South 2nd Street in Killeen, was both fun and educational.

All week long kids in Killeen have been having a blast and learning from their local police officers.

“We learn a lot of stuff not to do when we grow up,” said a young camp goer. “Also, since we have electronics like a phone, X-Box, or tablet, we learned not to speak to strangers on that and not to cyber bully.”

Cyber safety wasn’t the only thing the kids were learning.

“We did classes on drunk driving,” said Officer Derrick Burleson, KPD Community Engagement Unit. “I didn’t go too in-depth but just kind of gave them information on what drunk driving is.”

While wearing special goggles that simulate being drunk, the kids tried several activities.

Even driving a peddle car that simulated what it is like to drive drunk.

News 10 asked the children at the camp, “So what are you going to do, drink and drive or not drink and drive?”

“No. Not drink and drive ever. Not drink and drive,” the camp goers beamed.

The camp was about more that spending time with police officers.

“With is coming out, playing with the kids, talking with the kids, we want them to see how we are as human beings,” said Officer Burleson. “Not just as police officers but as human beings. Kids come up and play with us, they dab us up, give is a hand shack, and sometimes some kids give us a hug. That’s what I want right there. I don’t want the kids to be afraid of talking to us.”

The kids had a message to the officers they spent the week with.

“Thank you,” that all shouted as a group.

There were serious moments like when a tow company brought out a car that was part of a fatal drunk driving accident.

Those serious moments didn’t stop the kids from having fun and making some new friends at KP
