QUINCY (WGEM) – Friday marked the beginning of the 21st annual Quincy Derby.
Specifically, the Super Kids Races have been going on for about 10 years, but excitement levels for the event are at an 11.
T-shirts, medals, and even snow cones were provided for the kids to enhance the experience, and making it the best time for the kids is what it’s all about.
“It’s the video the parents send me when it’s all over with, it’s these kids sleeping with their trophies at night. It’s the yeehaws these kids got going on at the victory stand. It’s all the pictures and pride in the faces of the parents when they’re seeing their kid receive these trophies, and do things they never thought they’d be capable of doing,” said Ray Wilson, Super Kids Races co-director.
It’s not just for the parents, it’s about showing everyone they are capable of doing the unthinkable.
“Every time we do anything, we’re trying to create opportunities for the students, and open doors for them, it’s not what they can’t do, it’s what they can do,” said Ken Mansell, Illinois School for the Visually Impaired Athletic Director.
Wilson and Mansell added that their favorite part of their work comes on days like today, when they can help put a smile on everyone’s faces.
The Quincy Derby continues on Saturday with 120 cars will race down 18th Street.
