New food truck offers options for those with celiac, gluten sensitivities

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – A local food truck is bringing fair food to those with celiac disease.

Celiac is an autoimmune disorder that’s triggered by eating gluten. Roughly one in 133 Americans has the disease, according to Beyond Celiac.

Dee’s Donuts is a new designated gluten-free food truck in Minot.

Owner Duane Lothspeich said the idea started in 2018, but didn’t happen until this year.

He shared that he has celiac and so do several of his family members, which inspired the venture.

“It was really heartbreaking to see a 10-year-old girl go to the fair and can’t have any fair foods, so I thought, why not a food truck and sell fair foods?” said Lothspeich.

Lothspeich said it has become a family affair with relatives helping run the business.

However, the impact of the food truck is on more than just family, but also on people like Alexa Rostvetd.

“It’s just a great opportunity for people with gluten sensitivities, gluten allergies to be able to indulge in the luxuries of food trucks,” said Rostvetd.

Lothspeich said he is looking to continue growing the truck with more food options and events next year.

The truck’s next event is June 16 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Walmart, with all tips going to the Children’s Miracle Network.
