Registration deadline for kids to win a free bike is coming Sunday

TOLEDO, Ohio — The registration deadline for the Charles E. Boyk Law’s 17th annual Bikes for Kids Contest is fast approaching. 

The law firm has teamed up with Wersell’s Bike Shop for the last 17 years to give back to kids during the summer bike riding months. The firm’s Marketing Content Producer, Gregory Tye, said the reason for giving has evolved over the years, but they’re happy to have been able to give out 165 bikes to some deserving kids. 

“It initially started as a way of promoting bike safety. Getting kids helmets and that sort of thing. It’s evolved over the years and these nominations are a way for us to say these kids are deserving and its someway of rewarding them for whatever they’ve done. If it’s give back to the community, if it’s do really, really well in school, if it’s overcoming a hardship. it’s a way of recognizing these kids,” Tye said. 

Here’s how the contest works: adults take the time to nominate a child or children they believe deserve a free bicycle for their efforts. Tye said there are times to often adults forget how hard kids work to evolve, change, grow into the people we love for the future. 

This giveaway also helps shine a light and give back to a community that’s supported the Boyk Law Firm. Tye said it’s always fun to surprise the winners over the 10-week giveaway. 

“Some of them think they’re going to a doctor’s office. Some of them think they’re waiting on meeting somebody that they don’t really want to do. This is a part of their summer that they’re not really expecting and then suddenly they walk into this bike shop and it’s a surprise to them and they get rewarded with this amazing bike from Wersell and they get a helmet, they get a bike lock,” Tye said. 

The giveaway starts on June 18, 2025, and each Wednesday, a child will receive a surprise bike, helmet and lock. Tye said this year they’ve had a record number of nominations and look forward to reading through each one of them, after the registration deadline, Sunday, June 15, 2025.
