WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Sandy’s Summer Splash into Reading is back and runs through July 19.
The program encourages kids to read during summer break, as every minute they read, a penny will be donated to area literacy organizations.
“It’s a philanthropic program for your kids. You’re teaching them that by reading, they’re giving and they’re supporting something in a bigger way,” Wendy Furrer said.
Furrer is a member of the Early Bird Rotarian Club, one of the two groups that benefit from Summer Splash.
Her organization goes into Wausau-area classes to read to students and give them books.
The other beneficiary is the Marathon County Literary Council, which offers its services to people of all ages.
“We are 100 percent free, so anyone that comes in here does not pay for their assistance,” McLit executive director Connie Heidemann said.
Summer Splash was all the brainchild of Jessica Kopecky, who was inspired after a book she wrote captured the attention of reluctant readers.
“The kids can sign up until the end of the event, so July 19, and they become qualified for prizes, including a grand prize,” Kopecky said.
