Harrisonburg Fire Department hosts ‘Safe Kids Day’

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – At a Dream Come True Playground, families gathered for sweet treats, a Touch-a-Truck, and to learn safety tips heading into the summer season, as part of Harrisonburg Fire Departments partnership with Safe Kids Day.

Tori Tucker, HFD’s risk reduction education specialist, said teaching parents about car seat safety and other safety information is always important as people head into summer travel season.

“As summer ramps up, everyone’s going on different vacations, traveling all over the country. So we just like to come out and check car seats and then promote people to take the time and actually look to see where they’re traveling and what states they’re going through, because there’s different laws for each state as far as child safety,” Tucker said. “You got to make sure that you’re following each state’s laws.

Tucker added that as families head to the pool or beach this summer parents should be supervising and putting life jackets on their kids. Since it can only take a matter of seconds before they are at risk of getting hurt.

Tucker also highlighted that they have another event coming up on July 9, for HFD’s Smoke Alarm and Free Pizza night, where people can get a free pizza from Cicis Pizza and HFD will also come out and check their smoke alarms at their residences.
