Council approves version 2 of homeless action plans written under the ‘Kids First Initiative’

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – During the city council meeting on June 10, the council approved version two of the homeless action plan.

The plan was written to address transitional and chronic homelessness under the “Kids First Initiative.”

According to officials, the two main organizations dealing with homelessness, the Salvation Army and the C Carter Crane Shelter, were not involved in the creation of the plan.

While the council agrees the plan is a step in the right direction, others in the community have shared concerns about the wording used within the plan, saying it further continues the rhetoric of criminalizing homelessness.

“Unfortunately, I think this plan feeds into some misinformation and stereotypes about folks experiencing homelessness that’s not particularly helpful,” Senior Policy Analyst, Oklahoma Policy Institute, Sabine Brown said.
