Vanderburgh Humane Society renames pet food pantry after longtime volunteer

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The Vanderburgh Humane Society is renaming its pet food assistance program after a longtime volunteer who passed away in 2024.

Margie Cox was a critical volunteer at the VHS for more than 23 years and volunteered with the VHS in a variety of ways, but was an especially integral part of the pet food bank.

To honor her legacy, VHS has renamed the program to “Margie’s Pet Food Pantry.” The food pantry keeps pets in their homes and ensures they don’t go hungry.

For over 20 years, on the third Monday of the month, Margie was there passing out pet food to community members who needed it.

“We knew that the best way to honor her would be to name something after her, something that she was passionate about, that she dedicated a lot of her time to,” Amanda Coburn, Director of Advancement at VHS said.

VHS Marketing and Communications Specialist Megan Baggett redesigned the logo for the pet food pantry to include a dachshund, Margie’s favorite dog breed, a font modeled after Margie’s handwriting and colors inspired by kibble and Margie’s signature denim shirts.

The program has also expanded to now serve families within 3 business days rather than just once a month.

Members of the public who would like to contribute to Margie’s Pet Food Pantry can make a monetary donation here or drop off pet food of any brand Tuesday through Saturday from 12-6 p.m.
