Tama Co. police respond to swatting incident with potential ties to popular video game

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – On the morning of June 11, around 9:33 a.m., the Tama County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a person claiming they had shot their sister, tied up their parents, and had intent to harm police. The person who called gave an address in the Tama area where they were located.

Police responded immediately to the situation, checking several homes in the area, as well as securing the area. They realized that this was a swatting call, a false emergency call attempting to get police to one specific area. Since Police have been investigating, it has been shown to be tied to the video game Fortnite. Swatting situations put innocent lives in danger, and there has been an increase in calls related to online gaming.

The Tama County Sheriff’s Office said this situation serves as a good reminder of internet safety. Parents should keep an eye out to make sure their children are playing video games responsibly, especially when they involve talking with strangers.

The investigation is ongoing.
