A bill to keep food out of landfills is advancing in Maine.
The bill would require large food institutions like grocery stores and college cafeterias to donate unused food or compost what can’t be consumed.
It’s cleared the Maine Legislature, and supporters are urging Governor Janet Mills to sign it.
If she does, Maine will join New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island with similar laws.
