Lowcountry Food Bank receives $300,000 donation from Publix

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Lowcountry Food Bank announced Wednesday that it received a $300,000 donation from Publix Super Markets Charities to purchase a 26-inch refrigerated box truck.

The funds were also used to purchase racking, which is a system of shelves and structures to store food and other related items, for the food bank’s new Southern Regional Food Center in Early Branch.

The newly purchased truck will help transport more food to all 10 counties throughout the Lowcountry.

Lowcountry officials said that the food insecurity has reached its highest level in more than 20 years and more than 13% of the population in the counties. The Food Bank wants to ensure that people who experience food insecurity have equal access to healthy food.

Nick Osborne, Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO, said he is proud to be a partner with the store and appreciates all the assistance they provided throughout the years.

“We are so proud to work with Publix as a long-standing partner that always steps up and makes an enormous difference in the lives of the neighbors we serve. Publix understands that more and more families have turned to us to help put healthy food on the table while we continue to navigate economic inflationary issues and higher food and transportation costs. We’re grateful to Publix Super Markets Charities for their years of support in helping alleviate hunger in our communities,” he said.

Publix CEO Kevin Murphy said he is grateful to provide food to people in need in the Lowcountry.

“At Publix, we believe providing food for our neighbors in need is our greatest opportunity to give back and doing so is at the heart of our philanthropic efforts. We’re also grateful to Publix Super Markets Charities for its continued commitment to helping people experiencing food insecurity. Publix and Publix Charities’ continued work with food banks across the Southeast provides vital resources and nourishment to better the lives of individuals in our communities,” Murphy said.

This Publix donation is one of several donations aimed at providing food and other essential support to those facing hunger. Publix Super Markets Charities has donated $11 million to Feeding America food banks and other nonprofit partners in total in 2024.
