An investigation into a fired Jeffco Public Schools leader determined the administrator purchased child sexual abuse material, but did not have direct criminal contact with any minors, in person or online, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office began investigating David Weiss, who served as the district’s chief of schools, last year. Jeffco Public Schools fired Weiss in December, and he died by suicide in Maryland while under investigation.
Authorities opened the investigation into Weiss after receiving a tip from a financial brokerage firm in late 2024 saying the administrator had used bitcoin to buy child sexual abuse material, according to a news release.
Sheriff’s officials said they searched both Weiss’ home and his work electronics, including computers, iPads and cellphones, and did not find any evidence that he had criminal physical or online contact with children.
Jeffco Public Schools was notified of the investigation and cooperated, sheriff’s officials said.
When asked for comment, the district released a statement that reiterated the findings of the sheriff’s investigation.
