Carney appoints finance veteran Sabia to head Canada federal bureaucracy

(Reuters) -Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday said he was appointing Michael Sabia, a veteran financial expert who heads power-generating utility Hydro-Quebec, to run the Canadian federal bureaucracy.

Sabia has been at Hydro-Quebec since 2023, when he left his post as the top bureaucrat at the federal finance ministry. He also served as the head of Canada’s second-biggest pension fund from 2009 to 2020.

“Mr. Sabia brings over three decades of expertise across the public and private sectors,” Carney’s office said in a statement. Sabia will take over as clerk of the Privy Council – the head of the civil service – on July 9.
