MACON, Ga. — As summer begins, some families lose access to free and reduced-price meals through their local school districts. But this Friday, a food giveaway is taking place, stepping up to the plate in hopes of fighting food insecurity in Central Georgia.
At the Atrium Health Amphitheater’s North Gate Lot, Atrium Health Navicent and an array of other organizations will be distributing free food to families.
The giveaway happens from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, June 13 at 3657 Eisenhower Parkway. They say that people looking for assistance must enter from Bloomfield Road.
They’ll also only be serving drive-thru customers, noting that walk-ups are not allowed.
The event is being held by Horace Holmes Ministries, Macon-Bibb County, Atrium Health Navicent, the Oakview Group, the Society of St. Andrew and the Southeast Produce Council.
It’s unclear how much food will be given out on Friday. However, last year, Atrium Health Navicent gave out 40,000 pounds of food and produce during another summer food giveaway.
That giveaway was part of an effort to improve health outcomes in Central Georgia through a focus on healthy food.
“Small, healthy changes on a family level can make a big difference to the overall health of our community,” Atrium Health Navicent President Delvecchio Finley said in the press release.
Back in February 2022, the hospital began its “Healthy Communities Food as Medicine Market and Food Farmacy” program. In its first year, they say the program helped 1,800 Central Georgians and provided 29,000 pounds of food to people in need, the hospital said. The “Food Farmacy” is located at 618 Orange Street Lane.
