MCSO and MCPSS host ‘Camp Explorer’ to teach kids about public safety and the community

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Summer is in full swing, and for many children, that means heading off to summer camp.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and Mobile County Public School System are launching the first-ever ‘Camp Explorer’ for kids ages 8 to 12.

The camp kicked off Tuesday at Semmes Middle School and ends Thursday.

During the camp, children are divided into four squads, simulating the roles of deputies. There, they learn about the many layers of public safety.

Campers also attend field trips to local businesses and visit scenic locations across Mobile County. MCSO says the camp is designed to create positive relationships between the sheriff’s office and the young members of the community.

Registration is closed for this camp but don’t worry; a second camp is planned for June 24 through June 26 at Hankins Middle School. The cost is $50 per child. Each camp is limited to 100 kids and each child must bring a lunch every day.
